How should hearing screening tests be offered?

Abstract

This paper deals with the question of how the general public should be addressed when offering hearing screening. Postal-based questionnaires in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands were sent to users of hearing devices, those that are in the process of obtaining one, or those that have indicated that they have special interest in hearing. Results of the survey indicated that respondents were enthusiastic about the idea of being able to carry out hearing self-screening tests via the internet, telephone, or questionnaires. A questionnaire as a method to screen on hearing was generally preferred above using the internet, which was preferred over using the telephone for the test. About 27% of the respondents indicated to use exclusively one method. Most respondents indicated that either method provided would be of interest (41%), 17% indicated not to be interested in conducting screening tests using the internet.

Este trabajo maneja la pregunta de cómo debería abordarse el público en general para ofrecer las pruebas de tamización auditivas. Se enviaron por correo cuestionarios en el Reino Unido, en Alemania y en los Paises Bajos a usuarios de dispositivos auditivos, a aquellos que están en proceso de obtener uno, o a aquellos que han indicado que tienen un interés especial en la audición. Los resultados de la encuesta indicaron que aquellos que responden se mostraron entusiasmados con la idea de poder realizarse una prueba de auto-evaluación de la audición por medio de internet, de teléfono o de un cuestionario. El uso del cuestionario como método de tamización de la audición fue en general preferido que el uso de internet, y éste lo fue sobre el uso del teléfono para la prueba. Cerca del 27% de los que respondieron indicaron que usarían exclusivamente un método. La mayor parte de los que respondieron indicaron que cualquier método utilizado sería de interés (41%): 17% indicaron no estar interesados en realizar ningún tipo de examen de tamización mediante el uso de internet.
