Music venues and hearing loss: Opportunities for and barriers to improving environmental conditions

Abstract

This study explores the opportunities for and barriers to improving environmental conditions in order to reduce the risk for music-induced hearing loss in people who attend music venues. Individual semi-structured interviews were held with 20 representatives of music venues and of governmental organizations, according to a semi-structured interview guide. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and systematically coded using a content-analysis technique. Reported opportunities to reduce music volume included improving the acoustics and installing advanced speaker systems. The most important barrier reported was the lack of clear definitions of what levels of high-volume music are hazardous. Other barriers mentioned included economic considerations, and the beliefs that visitors demand high-volume music in music venues and are personally responsible for their own hearing. Before measures to improve environmental conditions are implemented, the exact dangers of exposure to high-volume music have to be established. Evidence-based guidelines and safety standards for leisure-time noise exposure should therefore be developed.

Este estudio explora las oportunidades y las barreras para mejorar las condiciones ambientales para lograr la reducción del riesgo de hipoacusia inducida por música en las personas que asisten a conciertos musicales. Se sostuvieron entrevistas individuales semi-estructuradas con 20 representantes de los conciertos musicales y de organizaciones gubernamentales, de acuerdo a una guía de entrevistas semi-estructuradas. Las entrevistas fueron grabadas, transcritas y codificadas sistemáticamente mediante una técnica de análisis de contenidos. Las oportunidades que fueron reportadas para reducir la intensidad de la música incluyeron mejorar la acústica e instalar un sistema avanzado de altavoces. La barrera más importante reportada fue la falta de definiciones claras sobre los niveles altos en la intensidad de la música, que son dañinos. Otras barreras mencionadas incluyeron consideraciones económicas y la creencia de que los asistentes demandan una alta intensidad de la música en los conciertos musicales y que son ellos personalmente responsables de su propia audición. Antes de implementar mejorías en las condiciones ambientales, es necesario establecer el peligro de la exposición a alta intensidad musical. Deben desarrollarse lineamientos basados en evidencias y estándares de seguridad para el ruido recreativo.
