Dr. Ted van Baarda is Brigadier Executive Director of the International Society for Military Ethics in Europe – EuroISME. The opinions expressed in this article reflect only his personal views. He has taught military ethics and moral decision-making extensively at the Netherlands Defence Academy as well as at military academies abroad. He has published on human rights, humanitarian assistance, humanitarian law and military ethics, with an emphasis on the latter two.
