Over the past half-century, Gerald Schamess, professor emeritus at Smith College School for Social Work, was a towering figure in the world of psychoanalytically oriented social work. Having joined the Smith faculty in 1969, Gerry held such influential roles as Editor of the Smith College Studies in Social Work and co-chair of the doctoral program. He was also a founding member of the editorial board of this journal. Moreover, he was a consummate clinician, supervisor, and educator. His extensive clinical writing was often profoundly personal, thought-provoking, and humble. Classically trained in psychoanalytic theory and practice, he was nonetheless continuously open to new ideas, particularly as they pertained to the psychotherapy process and clinical supervision.
In this Special Issue, we are seeking papers and essays that honor the spirit of inquiry that Professor Schamess brought to his life’s work. That spirit reflected a deep appreciation for psychoanalytically oriented clinical theory and its relation to the practice of clinical social work, the application of psychoanalytic theory to various vulnerable populations, reflective use of self, the nature of therapeutic change, and beyond.
