Shared Mourning, Transgenerational Trauma and Large Group Identity: A Review of the Contributions of Vamik Volkan

Pages 86-94 | Published online: 02 Jul 2020

Notes

1 Matthew Steinfeld introduces the concept of Layton’s “unconscious normative processes” in his review of Vamik’s Room to analyze and enrich the discussion of Volkan’s concept of hot spots and incomplete mourning. He states, “When repressive social processes are pervasive yet remain unthought, they can engender what Lynne Layton (Citation2017) has termed ‘normative unconscious processes’” (Steinfeld, Citation2018, p. 742).
