Abstract
In this paper, consideration is given to contemporary culture’s impact on language and its communicative potential. Drawing on psychoanalytic understanding of the human herd instinct, particularly in time of strife, this essay outlines what the “talking cure” has to offer as counterpoint to group think and as a means to enter into all that is idiosyncratic and individual in the use of language.
