Triadic Reality, the Now System, and Maternal Desire: Thoughts on Daphne de Marneffe's Maternal Desire

Abstract

Maternal desire is discussed as it coexists with and is tutored by paternal desire and the spousal relationship. Triadic reality and the Now moment are introduced as relevant variables in the regulation of all intrapsychic and interactive phenomena.

James M. Herzog

James M. Herzog, M.D., is an adult and child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He is a training and supervisory analyst and a child and adolescent supervisory analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and a supervisory analyst at the Sigmund Freud Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. He teaches at the Harvard Medical School. His research has centered on fathers, the transmission of trauma with special reference to the Holocaust, and the functions of play. His book Father Hunger was published in 2001.
