Notes
1 We are intentional about our language choices because of long history of stigmatizing descriptions that reflect attributions of deviance and exceptionalism and have been empirically shown to influence attitudes negatively. As such, we will not use the terms “abuse,” “medication assisted treatment,” “relapse,” “addict,” and “clean,” among other terms and encourage others writing in this space to similarly refrain to avoid the stigmatizing impact of such terms. This is our only point of departure from the Target Article. For more information, see Wakeman and Rich (Citation2018).
