Investigating Adult Children’s Experiences with Privacy Turbulence Following the Discovery of Parental Infidelity

Pages 41-57 | Published online: 08 Jan 2015

Abstract

Guided by communication privacy management theory (CPMT), the purpose of the present study was to understand the privacy turbulence adult children recalled experiencing after learning of their parents’ infidelity. To answer the research question, 38 individuals who indicated that one or both of their parents had engaged in an extramarital relationship were interviewed. Findings indicated that individuals experienced privacy turbulence in the form of family privacy dilemmas (confidant, accidental, illicit, and dishonesty dilemmas) and delayed understanding. These findings were compared and contrasted to previous research.
