Psychotherapy for Autism

Pages 22-31 | Published online: 12 Mar 2009

Abstract

There are at least two arguments that suggest caution in applying dynamic psychotherapy based on psychoanalytic principles in ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders). First, ASD is too broad a designation leading to uncertainty as to the cognitive status of a child so designated. Moreover, if a treatment is effective the dilution of the group makes its generalized application uncertain. Second, if autism is a disturbance of Affective Contact and communication the use of constructs employing play and reflective function are not easily applicable to the ASD group.
