When, Why and How: Does Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Have A Place On The Spectrum?

Abstract

This paper delineates two kinds of frequent misunderstanding about the applicability of psychodynamic formulations and therapeutic interventions to work with people on the autistic spectrum. Examples of each type of error, and discussion of some of the reasons they occur are followed by a variety of examples of ways psychodynamic therapy can be highly appropriate and valuable. The cost of leaving such approaches out of the intervention model is seen to have a high cost.
