A. Susan Owen and Peter Ehrenhaus wish to acknowledge that the image identified as Jesse Washington in the following article “Communities of Memory, Entanglements, and Claims of the Past on the Present” published in Critical Studies in Media Communication volume 27, issue 2 June 2010 DOI: 10.1080/15295030903551017 p. 148 was based upon identification from the first edition of Without Sanctuary. Subsequent editions corrected identification of that image as Will Stanley, who was lynched in Temple, TX in 1915. (Jesse Washington was lynched in Waco, TX in 1916). The Crisis published the image in question in January 1916 (vol. 11, no. 3, p. 145) and identified the lynching victim as Will Stanley (based upon newspaper reports and letters written to The Crisis). The accompanying text indicates that images of Stanley's lynching were circulating in Waco. No record is made of the lynching of Will Stanley in Thirty Years of Lynching, published by the NAACP in 1918.
