ABSTRACT
The rise of the Internet has had the paradoxical effect in some instances of decreasing awareness among potential patrons of what medical libraries can provide them in both hard copy and electronic form. Assuming that everything is free on the Internet, some medical providers rely on Google and other search engines, not realizing that a vast amount of information is stored in databases to which their medical librarians can provide expert access with more facility, speed and regularity than the users can. To endow medical staff with a medical literature awareness tool, our library used free Web 2.0 tools to create a Web-based, free table of contents alerting system that was purposely restricted to journals to which our library has immediate access. Librarians without many web authoring skills can create their own alerting system using the techniques outlined in this article, thereby increasing document delivery rates and the visibility of their libraries in their respective institutional settings.
