When Graduate Degrees Prostitute the Educational Process: Degrees Gone Wild

Pages 263-278 | Published online: 03 Feb 2007

Abstract

Graduate degrees prostitute the educational process when they are sold to consumers by unaccredited degree/diploma mills as being equivalent to legitimate, bona-fide degrees awarded by accredited graduate schools. This article carefully analyzes the serious problems of bogus degrees and their association with the religious higher education enterprise. This study examined the historical evolution of bogus degrees and the eventual formation of degree/diploma mills in America. The effects and ramifications that the prostitution of the educational process has on society is analyzed from a social perspective. The findings reveal that society suffers from the proliferation of bogus degrees awarded by degree/diploma mills. A biblical perspective is presented to demonstrate the serious crisis plaguing religious institutions of higher education because of religious degree/diploma mills.
