New Reflections on Mirror Neuron Research, the Tower of Babel, and Intercultural Education

Pages 322-337 | Published online: 23 Sep 2015

Abstract

Studies of the human mirror neuron system demonstrate how mental mimicking of one's social environment affects learning. The mirror neuron system also has implications for intercultural encounters. This article explores the common ground between the mirror neuron system and theological principles from the Tower of Babel narrative and applies them to intercultural education. Neuroscience in dialog with the story of the Tower of Babel assists Christian educators to reflect theologically and think creatively about designing learning activities and educational systems for intercultural learning.
