The Wide Wild World of Hemp

Bibliotheca Cannabinacea

Pages 176-188 | Published online: 12 Oct 2008

ABSTRACT

Hemp has been written about for millennia, thus there is a great body of literature on the subject. Written mention of hemp is to be found from before Christ, in a 5th century AD document, and from then on in early herbals, government farming manuals, textbooks, and technical manuals; more recently, there have been books just on the history and revival of hemp. That latter group includes books that cover or are almost exclusively about marijuana, and therefore there is a period in recent history where many hemp books have a subversive, counterculture flavor.

96. Wissett, R., 1804. Esq. A Treatise on Hemp, comprehending a detailed account of the various modes of culture and preparation, as practised in Europe, Asia, and America; with observations on the Sunn Plant of India. London. Pp. viii, 221, 4 to, 5 plts. This is one of the most sought after works on the subject. Wissett divides his work into chapters on each stage of cultivation and processing, in which he quotes various authors, thus comparing opinions. Published at a time when hemp growing was at a peak, this gathers together a range of views from different sources. There are engravings of botanical ills. and two reproductions from Diderot's Encyclopedie. The latter have been slightly modified from the originals, and depict workmen at various stages of hemp production. The five plates are excellent examples of early 19th century engraving, highly collectible by themselves. The 2nd ed. (1808) includes two appendices; one, a letter by Lord Somerville, the other a letter from H. Saunders.
