Cultural Exposure as a Creative Experiential Learning Intervention

ABSTRACT

Counselor education programs often use cultural immersion as a creative pedagogical approach to foster cultural responsiveness. This form of experiential learning can instill and deepen multicultural and social justice counseling competencies. The purpose of this article is to highlight the potential of a domestic immersion experience as a creative experiential learning intervention by outlining one counselor education program’s experience using a brief cultural immersion trip over the course of three years. The author highlights the importance of using experiential learning to instill cultural responsiveness, describes the cultural immersion trip, and discusses applications for counselor education programs seeking to implement a cultural immersion experience.
