Maps, Geography Libraries, and Health Outcomes: Gazing into the Future of Medical Geography

Pages 2-12 | Published online: 07 Jan 2011

Abstract

This article introduces issues and concepts related to current opportunities in medical geography. The opportunities described herein pertain to not only the academic geographer, but also to the nonacademic researcher wishing to utilize geographic insights. These opportunities lend themselves to map and geography reference librarians who oversee the databases and archives that support these research endeavors. As these special theme issues on “Geographic Opportunities in Medicine” will reveal, map and geography libraries can act as “enablers” to distribute geographic databases and resources to a wider, nontraditional and nonacademic audience of health care delivery and service providers.
