Abstract

The geographic information is a commodity of high economic and political value, which in addition supports a variety of state services to the citizens. The opportunities for libraries are related to the development of geographical services and collections. That makes the guidance and the educational support essential for meeting the needs of a variety of users with a range of skills and levels of knowledge. In Greece, Map/GIS Librarianship is in its infancy and users consider libraries insufficient to cover their geographical needs. Nevertheless, in recent years, many organized and cooperative efforts have been made towards to geographical collections re-organization, to the adoption of new practices, and to the communication of their services to their communities, so to gain their trust. This paper brings together results from various conducted researches related to the development of a geographical collection in Greece. After processing, the results from these researches reinforced by the international bibliography and several examples of Map/GIS libraries, formulated a methodology approach regarding the steps and practices to be followed by a library that intends to develop a geographic collection. The suggested practices can be adopted regardless of geographic region, and adapted by any library interested in developing geographical collections.

Notes

1 Although according Johnson and Phoenix (Citation2003) “GIS is an interdisciplinary tool that can be used by all university departments.

4 An example of such cooperation is the Newport Beach Public Library, which provides direct access to city public services, parcel information and demographics. (www.newportbeachlibrary.org, www.newportbeachca.gov). The library provides the point of access to information as well as the established information policy, and the municipal authority provides specialization in GIS for the database development and maintenance and the creation of the user interface.

6 The rest of this treasure was discovered in the historical archive of the French Ministry of Defense in Vincent. After being studied by experts in history, politics, art and technology, the two collections, joined in Thessaloniki through the Exhibition entitled “Archipelagos 1685–1687 in the maps of Louis XIV” organized by the Library and Information Center of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in collaboration with the Consulate General of France in Thessaloniki and the AUTH Cartography Laboratory, providing answers that nowadays help to deepen our understanding of the balance and strategic importance that the Aegean always had as a sea that unites - or separates – the West and the East, Europe and Asia. Thus, for the first time, 39 rare manuscript French Cycladic maps of the world, exquisite art and technique, aesthetic examples of classicism's influence on cartography, as well as 28 panoramas of art were exhibited for the first time (https://www.lib.auth.gr/el/Arxipelagos_Telloglio) [in Greek].

7 The collaboration extended to the organization of a seminar entitled “Maps in Libraries” where distinguished Greek and foreign scientists taught (http://cartography.web.auth.gr/cartogeolab/lib-seminar/)

8 Some of the fields used were the map identification number, the full title, the author/s, the engraver, the publisher, the date and place of map publication, the scale of the map, the depicted area, as well as and information that links the map to the book he belongs to, such as the title of the book, the author/s, its location within the book, and a picture of its cover.

The information requested in the questionnaire relates to the listing of printed and digital collections, the content type, the geographical and thematic areas of interest, the material circulation, the collection’s location, the information management, the collection maintenance and destruction plan developed by the library, the communication plan and the social networks used for collections’ dissemination, as well as information on the human resources that manage the collection.
