Preparation and characterization of waterborne polyurethane based coating resins including near infrared blocking compound

Abstract

Near infrared (NIR) rays, which account for 53% of sunlight, act as the strongest heat rays at 800–1,200 nm. Due to this heating action, the temperature inside a building or vehicle rises, which increases the use of air conditioners, energy consumption, and carbon dioxide generation increase. In order to solve this problem, a NIR blocking compound was prepared and introduced into the waterborne polyurethane (WPU) coating resin to prepare a WPU based coating resins including NIR blocking compound. As a result, a new absorption peak appeared around 870–910 nm which is the NIR region and a NIR blocking rate of 58.3% was confirmed.
