¹The other seven principles are (a) assessment for learning should be regarded as a key professional skill for teachers, (b) assessment for learning should be sensitive and constructive because an assessment has an emotional impact, (c) assessment for learning should take account of the importance of learner motivation, (d) assessment for learning should promote commitment to learning goals and a shared understanding of the criteria by which they are assessed, (e) assessment for learning develops learners' capacity for self-assessment so that they can become reflective and self-managing, and (f) assessment for learning should recognize the full range of achievements of all learners.

²The full descriptor for National Curriculum subject English Level 5 (lowest = Level 1, highest = Level 8, age range = 5–14) is: “Pupils' writing is varied and interesting, conveying meaning clearly in a range of forms for different readers, using a more formal style where appropriate. Vocabulary choices are imaginative and words are used precisely. Simple and complex sentences are organised into paragraphs. Words with complex regular patterns are usually spelt correctly. A range of punctuation, including commas, apostrophes and inverted commas, is usually used accurately.
