Effect of the Heating Rate on the Morphology of the Pyrolytic Char From Hazelnut Shell

Abstract

Effects of the heating rate on the structure of the pyrolytic chars from hazelnut shell were investigated under different heating rates (5–50°C/minute). Pyrolysis of hazelnut shell was conducted in a thermogravimetric analyzer under nitrogen flow from ambient to 900°C. Variations in the char morphology were studied considering the heating rate during charring. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was applied to chars to test the effect of the heating rate. Dominant inorganic phases of hazelnut shell were determined to survive in the char. High lignin content of this biomass sample was concluded to play a critical role on the decomposition mechanism.
