ABSTRACT

This paper proposes an energy management system for an effective operation of micro-grids. In recent years, the penetration of the distributed energy resources such as photovoltaic and wind turbine generators into the electrical networks has been increasing. These resources generate perturbations and instability in the electrical grid. Battery energy storage system is the most used recently on micro-grids in order to manage the integration of intermittent of energy resources and help the control system to reduce the undesirable effects like power fluctuations because of perturbations (fault, short-circuit,…etc). However, for control and management purposes, a power distribution network can be modeled as a discrete or hybrid (discrete events and continuous variables) event system. This distributed topology will enhance the resilience of the power grid, facilitate the integration of distributed energy resources, especially renewable sources, accommodate energy storage units, and enhance the quality of delivered power. The main objective of this paper is to highlight a methodology for surveillance and performance analysis of a micro-grid during a perturbation based on discrete event systems. This systematic control method is effective in managing many operations in smart grids. As result, the formulation of power network control problems in discrete event system is useful for energy management, control, modeling, and monitoring with diagnosis applications.
