A Tribute to Alan I. Green, MD, Former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dual Diagnosis

, MD, PhD

The long-time Journal of Dual Diagnosis Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Alan Green, passed away on November 26, 2020 after a long illness. Dr. Green invited me to join him as co- Editor-in-Chief in 2016. He stepped down from his role with the journal shortly before his passing. He had a truly extraordinary life and career and made very important contributions to the journal and to the field of dual diagnosis. This issue includes several tributes to Dr. Green. More information about Dr. Green can be found in these tributes as well as an article on the Dartmouth College website: https://geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/news/2020/geisel-professor-alan-i-green-md-dies/.

Dr. Green was chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine and Dartmouth-Hitchcock for 18 years. Remarkably, he was also principal investigator of the Dartmouth Center for Clinical and Translational Science called SYNERGY, which through its funding from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) and other sources provided resources for clinical research throughout the medical school. This position and the role as chair were no doubt both full-time jobs. Before holding this position, he was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School and director of the Commonwealth Research Center. His work was truly translational with numerous publications on patient-based studies as well as animal models. Perhaps the most noteworthy was his large body of work on clozapine, particularly the use of this antipsychotic in people with schizophrenia and co-occurring substance use disorders. I had the pleasure of working with him in a research capacity, through a multi-center alcohol use disorder clinical trial sponsored by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

The Journal of Dual Diagnosis has grown considerably since its inception in 2004. It was previously published under the title of Journal of Chemical Dependence Treatment and Dr. Green has contributed tremendously to this growth. He became Editor-in-Chief with Dr. Robert Drake in 2010. First of all, the journal literally grew in size from a handbook sized journal to the standard journal size. In addition, the journal is now included in all major databases. The impact factor has increased by over four-fold since 2010. Similarly, the citable items have doubled, and total citations have increased by over five times. The journal includes artwork relevant to dual diagnosis on the cover of the issues. The journal has an outstanding editorial board of leaders in the field. Working with Dr. Green on the journal was a wonderful experience. He will be greatly missed by all of us associated with the journal. In honor of his great service to the journal, he will assume the title of Editor Emeritus.

In closing, I want to say a few words about Dr. Green, the excellent advisor and wise man. I was always greatly impressed by his energy, intellect, and wisdom. I can personally attest to the excellent advice I received from him about the journal, research in dual diagnosis, and even career development. He will be missed by all who knew him.
