A new chelating ligand, 3,5‐dibenzyloxybenzoylvanillinhydrazone (HL) and its three transition metal complexes, ML2 · 5H2O [M=Co(II), Zn(II), Mn(II)], have been synthesized and characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, molar conductivity, thermal analyses, IR and 1H NMR spectra. A structure of the prepared complexes is suggested. The antibacterial activity and the scavenging activity of the prepared compounds have been evaluated. It is indicated that the Zn complexes possess better antibacterial activity than the ligand, and the scavenging activity of the ligand is largely changed by the formation of the complexes.
