Abstract

A new ternary copper(II) complex: [Cu (TBZ)(L-Ile)] ClO4·2H2O [TBZ = 2-(4′-thiazolyl) benzimidazole, L-Ile = L-isoleucinate], was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, IR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. The interaction of the complex with DNA was investigated by electronic absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, CD spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, and agarose gel electrophoresis. The results indicated that the complex could bind to DNA by intercalative mode, and cleave pBR322 DNA in the presence of vitamin C in the involvement of hydroxyl radicals, and probably singlet oxygen-like copper-oxo species.
