Abstract
Two Schiff base ligands N,N′-bis(5-bromosalicylidene)-1,3-pentanediamine (H2L1) and N,N′-bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylidene)-1,3-pentanediamine (H2L2) and their nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes [NiL1] (1) and [CuL2] (2) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, and single crystal X-ray crystallographic determination. The crystal of (1) is monoclinic: space group P21/c, a = 9.680(2), b = 21.970(3), c = 10.728(2) Å, β = 119.550(2)°, V = 1984.8(6) Å3, Z = 4. The crystal of (2) is orthorhombic: space group Pbca, a = 18.261(2), b = 12.250(1), c = 19.742(2) Å, V = 4416.2(7) Å3, Z = 8. The Ni and Cu atoms in the complexes are in square planar coordination. The effect of the complexes on the antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans were studied.
