ABSTRACT

A series of lanthanide(III) complexes, having the general formula [LnH2L (NO3)2]NO3 (where Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu; H2L = N, N'-bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylidene)1,3-propylenediimine) have been synthesized and characterized based on elemental analysis, molar conductivity, infrared, UV–visible, cyclic voltammetry, powder X-ray diffraction, mass, and fluorescence studies. Molar conductivity data suggest that the complexes are 1:1 electrolytes. The infrared spectral data suggest that the ligand binds through azomethine nitrogen and naphtholic oxygen atoms. IR studies reveal that the complexes contain both coordinating and ionic nitrate ligands. Neodymium, samarium, and europium complexes exhibit luminescence property. DNA-binding properties of complexes are investigated using spectrophotometry.
