Discussion of Roger Frie: Irreducible Cultural Contexts: German–Jewish Experience, Identity, and Trauma in a Bilingual Analysis

Abstract

In my discussion of Frie's article, I focus on the tension between, on one hand, his extensive focus on the influence of language and, on the other hand, the relational events so well described by him, including, in particular, the switching back and forth between English and German. These relational events play out around the choice of language and the many meanings of these choices. The dynamics of these events can be described from the perspective of the implicit-relational aspect of human relatedness which exists as an ever-present background that has its own texture and formative power that continuously inform and shape the process of explicit verbal meaning making. The article illustrates how the encounter and dialogue with the other, here Frie and his patient, reflect both the constitutive “power of language and culture” and the limits of this power.

Nella discussione del lavoro di Frie, mi focalizzo sulla tensione tra la sua approfondita attenzione posta all'influenza del linguaggio e agli eventi relazionali da lui così ben descritti, includendo in particolare le sostituzioni nell'utilizzo dell'inglese e del tedesco. Questi eventi relazionali si manifestano nella scelta del linguaggio e nei molteplici significati di queste scelte. Le dinamiche di questi eventi possono essere descritte dalla prospettiva della dimensione relazionale implicita della relazionalità umana, dimensione che rappresenta un background sempre presente, dotata di una propria tessitura e di un potere formativo che continuamente informa e modella il processo della costruzione esplicita del significato verbale. Il lavoro illustra come l'incontro e il dialogo con l'altro, qui tra Frie e il suo paziente, riflettono il costitutivo “potere del linguaggio e della cultura” e i limiti di questo potere.

Dans ma discussion de l'article de Frie, je me concentre sur la tension entre, d'une part, l'attention considérable qu'il porte à l'influence de la langue et, d'autre part, les événements relationnels qu'il décrit si bien, y inclut particulièrement les allers-retours entre l'anglais et l'allemand. Ces événements relationnels se jouent autour du choix de la langue et des multiples significations de ces choix. La dynamique de ces événements peut être décrite à partir d'une perspective de l'aspect implicite de la relation humaine toujours présent en arrière-plan, ayant sa propre texture et son influence formatrice, un aspect qui façonne continuellement le processus de signification verbale explicite. Cet article illustre comment la rencontre et le dialogue avec l'autre, ici, entre Frie et son patient, reflètent à la fois le “pouvoir constitutif de la langue et de la culture” et les limites de ce pouvoir.

In meiner Diskussion von Frie's Arbeit beziehe ich mich vor allem auf die Spannung zwischen seinem exklusiven Fokus auf den Einfluss der Sprache einerseits und andererseits auf das von ihm so gut beschriebene Beziehungsgeschehen, im speziellen den Wechsel zwischen englischer und deutscher Sprache. Diese Momente in der Beziehung zeigen sich vor allem im Zusammenhang mit der Wahl der Sprache und den vielen Bedeutungen der jeweiligen Wahl. Die Dynamik dieser Ereignisse kann aus der Perspektive des impliziten relationalen Aspektes menschlicher Bezogenheit beschrieben werden, der als permanent vorhandener Hintergrund existiert. Er hat seine eigene Struktur und formative Kraft, die den Prozess des Erzeugens explizit verbaler Bedeutung kontinuierlich mit Information versorgt und formt. Die Arbeit macht anschaulich, wie die Begegnung und der Dialog mit dem Anderen, in dem Fall zwischen Frie und seinem Patienten, uns beides erkennen lässt: die konstitutive „Macht von Sprache und Kultur“ und die Grenzen dieser Macht.

En mi discusión del artículo de Fries, me centro en la tensión entre, por un lado, su énfasis en la influencia del lenguaje y, por otro lado, los acontecimientos relacionales que tan bien describe, incluyendo la manera en que alternativamente se cambia del inglés al alemán. Estos acontecimientos relacionales se desarrollan alrededor de la elección del idioma y de los muchos sentidos de estas elecciones. Las dinámicas de estos acontecimientos se pueden describir desde la perspectiva del aspecto implícito de las relaciones humanas que está siempre presente como telón de fondo que tiene su propia textura y poder formativo que continuamente informa y conforma el proceso de realizar el sentido explícito verbal. El artículo ilustra como el encuentro y diálogo con el otro, en este caso Frie y su paciente, refleja el “poder constitutivo del lenguaje y la cultura” y los límites de este poder.
