Self Psychology and the Problem of the Other

Abstract

I explicate how psychoanalysis, in general, and self psychology, in particular, can offer us in-depth understandings of why discrimination and violence against the other is a common human phenomenon, how self psychology can offer us compelling reasons for why we must relate to those who are different from us, and why self psychology's concept of empathy offers us the best understanding for what constitutes a genuine relation to the other—one that finds profound reverberations in the ethical works of Kant, Buber, Levinas, and Arendt.

Explico como el psicoanálisis en general y la self psychology en particular nos pueden ofrecer una profunda comprensión de porqué la discriminación y la violencia contra el otro es un fenómeno humano común, como la self psychology nos ofrece razones convincentes del porqué debemos relacionarnos con aquellos que son diferentes a nosotros, y porqué el concepto de empatía en la self psychology nos ofrece la mejor comprensión sobre lo que constituye una relación genuina con el otro, comprensión que encuentra profundas reverberaciones en los trabajos éticos de Kant, Buber, Levinas, y Arendt.

J'explique comment la psychanalyse en général et la psychologie du soi en particulier peuvent nous offrir des compréhensions en profondeur des raisons pour lesquelles la discrimination et la violence contre l'autre est un phénomène humain courant, comment la psychologie du soi nous offre des raisons convaincantes pourquoi nous devons nous relier à ceux qui sont différents de nous, et pourquoi le concept d'empathie en psychologie du soi nous offre la meilleure compréhension de ce que constitue une relation authentique à l'autre, une compréhension qui trouve des résonances profondes dans les travaux éthiques de Kant, Buber, Levinas et Arendt.

In questo articolo spiego prima come la psicoanalisi in generale e la psicologia del sé in particolare possono fornirci approfondite letture del perché la discriminazione e la violenza verso gli altri costituiscano un comune fenomeno umano, poi come la psicologia del sé possa offrirci persuasive ragioni sul perché dobbiamo stabilire una relazione con coloro che sono differenti da noi, e infine perché il concetto di empatia della psicologia del sé ci offra la migliore comprensione di ciò che costituisce una relazione genuina con l'altro, una relazione che trova un profondo riverbero nei lavori sull'etica di Kant, Buber, Levinas e Arendt.

Ich lege hier dar, wie uns die Psychoanalyse im Allgemeinen und die Selbstpsychologie im Besonderen ein vertieftes Verständnis davon anbieten kann, warum Diskriminierung und Gewalt dem anderen gegenüber ein allgemein menschliches Phänomen ist; darüber hinaus, wie uns die Selbstpsychologie zwingende Gründe dafür aufzeigt, warum wir zu denen, die verschieden von uns sind, in Beziehung treten müssen, und warum das selbtspsychologische Konzept der Empathie uns das beste Verständnis davon anbietet, was eine echte Beziehung zum anderen konstituiert. Ein Verständnis das in grundlegender Weise in den ethischen Werken von Kant, Buber, Levinas und Arendt zur Sprache gebracht wird.
