An Adolescent Journey: Filling the Void With Sound

Abstract

This case presentation focuses on the way sound becomes a medium of connection between the therapist and her adolescent patient. Initially, attunement to sound helped the therapist establish a way of understanding and communicating with her patient, Ayda. During the course of the four-year treatment, the therapist learned about Ayda's internal world through the songs that Ayda brought to her sessions. Together, they learned how the songs provided words to describe Ayda's feelings, conflicts, fantasies, and needs. Over time, and with the work of the therapy, Ayda became able to make her own interpretations of the meanings of the songs.

La presentación de este caso se centra en la manera en que el sonido se convierte en un medio de conexión entre la terapeuta y su paciente adolescente. Inicialmente, la sintonía con el sonido ayudó al terapeuta a establecer una manera de entender y comunicarse con su paciente, Ayda. A lo largo del tratamiento de 4 años de evolución, el terapeuta fue cnociendo el mundo interno de Ayda a través de las canciones que traía a las sesiones. Juntas, aprendieron que las canciones suministraban las palabras para describir los sentimientos, conflictos, fantasias y necesidades. Con el paso del tiempo, y con el trabajo de la terapia, Ayda fue capaz de hacer sus propias interpretaciones sobre el significado de las canciones.

Cette présentation de cas met l'accent sur la manière par laquelle le son devient un moyen de connexion entre la thérapeute et sa patiente adolescente. Initialement, la résonance affective au son a aidé la thérapeute à établir un moyen de comprendre et de communiquer avec sa patiente, Ayda. Au cours du traitement d'une durée de quatre ans, la thérapeute a appris à connaître le monde intérieur d'Ayda au moyen des chansons qu'Ayda apportait à ses séances. Ensemble, elles ont appris comment les chansons fournissaient des mots pour décrire les sentiments, les conflits, les fantaisies et les besoins d'Ayda. Avec le temps, et avec le travail thérapeutique, Ayda est devenue capable de faire ses propres interprétations de la signification des chansons.

Inizialmente, la sintonizzazione con il sound aiutava la terapeuta a stabilire una modalità di comprensione e di comunicazione con la paziente, Ayda. Durante i quattro anni di terapia, la terapeuta fu in grado di conoscere il mondo interno di Ayda tramite le canzoni che la paziente stessa portava negli incontri. Insieme impararono come le canzoni fornivano parole per descrivere i sentimenti, le fantasie e i bisogni di Ayda. Nel corso del tempo, e con il procedere della terapia Ayda divenne capace di produrre proprie interpretazioni rispetto al significato delle canzoni.

Diese Falldarstellung konzentriert sich auf die Art und Weise, wie Musik ein Medium der Verbindung zwischen der Therapeutin und ihrer adoleszenten Patienten wird. Zu Beginn ist es die Einstimmung/Abstimmung auf die Musik, die der Therapeutin half, einen Weg des Verstehens und der Kommunikation mit ihrer Patientin, Ayda, zu etablieren. Während der vier Jahre dauernden Therapie waren es die „songs“, die Ayda in die Sitzung mitbrachte, durch die die Therapeutin die innere Welt Aydas kennenlernte. Gemeinsam entdeckten sie, wie die „songs“ Worte anboten für Aydas Gefühle, Konflikte, Phantasien und Notwendigkeiten. Im Laufe der Zeit und mit Hilfe der therapeutischen Arbeit wurde es Ayda möglich, die Bedeutung der „songs“ ganz persönlich zu interpretieren.
