The Many Faces of Twinship: From the Psychology of the Self to the Psychology of Being Human

Abstract

In this introductory article to this special section, we draw attention to the many faces that Kohut introduced with respect to what we now see as the multifaceted notion of twinship. We tease out and describe seven faces: (1) twinship as something between merger and mirroring, (2) twinship as a process of mutual finding, (3) twinship as a sense of belonging, (4) twinship as a way of passing on talents and skills to the next generation, (5) twinship in silent communication, (6) twinship as a sense of being a human among other human beings, and (7) twinship in trauma. We identify the faces in Kohut's writings and show their relevance to Kohut's personal history. In this way, we support Atwood and Stolorow's (1979) argument that a theory of psychoanalysis and the theorist's personal life influence each other. We conclude that what may have looked like insignificant shifts in Kohut's definition of twinship over time reveals a distinct theoretical transformation from the psychology of the self to what we refer to as the psychology of being human.

En este artículo introductorio a esta sección especial, llamamos la atención de las múltiples facetas que Kohut introdujo en relación a lo que ahora consideramos los aspectos múltiples de la noción de gemelaridad. Describimos y diferenciamos siete facetas: 1) la gemelaridad entre lo fusional y lo especular, 2) la gemelaridad como proceso de encuentro mutuo, 3) la gemelaridad como proceso de pertenencia, 4) la gemelaridad como manera de transmitir capacidades a la siguiente generación, 5) la gemelaridad en la comunicación silenciosa, 6) la gemelaridad como sentido de ser humano entre humanos, y 7) la gemelaridad en el trauma. Identificaremos estos aspectos en los escritos de Kohut y mostraremos su relevancia en la historia personal de Kohut. De esta manera damos soporte al argumento de Atwood y Stolorow (1979) según el que una teoría psicoanalítica y su autor se influyen mutuamente. Concluimos que lo que podría ser visto como cambios insignificantes a lo largo del tiempo en su definición de lo gemelar revelan una transformación teórica entre la psicología del self y lo que denominamos la psicología del ser humano.

Dans cet article d'introduction à cette section spéciale, nous attirons l'attention aux nombreux visages que Kohut a donnés à ce que nous voyons maintenant comme la notion à plusieurs facettes du jumelage. Nous en trouvons et en décrivons sept: 1) le jumelage comme se situant entre la fusion et l'expérience en mirroir, 2) le jumelage en tant que processus de se trouver mutuellement, 3) le jumelage en tant qu'un sentiment d'appartenance, 4) le jumelage en tant que manière de transmettre des talents et des habiletés à la génération suivante, 5) le jumelage dans la communication silencieuse, 6) le jumelage en tant que sentiment d'être un humain parmi les autres êtres humains, et 7) le jumelage dans le traumatisme. Nous identifions ces visages dans les écrits de Kohut et démontrons leur pertinence en lien avec l'histoire personnelle de Kohut. De cette manière, nous soutenons l'argument de Atwood et Stolorow (1979) qu'une théorie psychanalytique et la vie personnelle du théoricien s'influencent l'une l'autre. Nous concluons que ce qui a pu sembler être des modifications non significatives dans la définition du jumelage par Kohut se révèlent, avec le temps, comme une transformation théorique distinctive de la psychologie du self vers ce à quoi nous référons comme la psychologie d'être un humain.

Come introduzione a questa sessione speciale, attraverso il nostro articolo intendiamo orientare l'attenzione sulle molte prospettive elaborate da Kohut rispetto alla gemellarità, nozione che oggi consideriamo alquanto sfaccettata. Individuiamo e descriviamo sette di tali sfaccettature: 1) la gemellarità come qualcosa tra incorporazione e rispecchiamento; 2) la gemellarità come un processo di mutua scoperta; 3) la gemellarità come un senso di possesso; 4) la gemellarità come un modo di trasmettere talenti e competenze alla generazione successiva; 5) la gemellarità nella comunicazione silenziosa; 6) la gemellarità come un senso di essere un umano tra altri essere umani; 7) la gemellarità nel trauma. Identifichiamo le sfaccettature del concetto di gemellarità negli scritti di Kohut dimostrando la loro rilevanza in relazione alla storia personale di Kohut. Concludiamo sostenendo che ciò che possiamo avere osservato come cambiamenti insignificanti nella definizione di Kohut relativa alla gemellarità nel corso del tempo rivela una distinta trasformazione teoretica dalla psicologia del sé verso ciò che noi indichiamo come la psicologia dell'umano essere.

In der einführenden Arbeit zu diesem speziellen Abschnitt beleuchten wir die vielen Facetten, die Kohut im Hinblick auf das, was wir heute als die unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen der twinship-Übertragung sehen, hervorgehoben hat. Wir greifen 7 Aspekte heraus und beschreiben sie folgendermaßen: 1) twinship als etwas zwischen Verschmelzen und Spiegeln, 2) twinship als Prozess des sich gegenseitigen Findens, 3) twinship als Gefühl von Zugehörigkeit, 4) twinship als Weg der Übergabe von Talenten und Fähigkeiten an die nächste Generation, 5) twinship in stiller Kommunikation, 6) twinship als Gefühl, ein Mensch unter Menschen zu sein, und 7) twinship im Trauma. Wir identifizieren die verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen in Kohuts Schriften und zeigen deren Relevanz zu Kohuts persönlicher Geschichte auf. Auf diese Weise unterstützen wir Atwood und Stolorows (1979) Argument, dass die Theorie der Psychoanalyse und das persönliche Leben ihres Theoretikers sich gegenseitig beeinflussen. Wir kommen zu dem Schluss, dass das, was wie unbedeutende Wechsel in Kohuts Definition des Zwillingserlebens ausgesehen haben mag, doch eine bestimmte theoretische Transformation ist und zwar von einer Psychologie des Selbst hin zu dem, was wir eine Psychologie des menschlichen Seins nennen.

¹Although some authors have attempted to distinguish the twinship and alter-ego concepts (Detrick, 1985, 1986; Brothers, 1993, 1994), in this article, we use twinship, rather than alter-ego. The latter term is seldom, if ever, used by contemporary authors in the development of self psychology after Kohut.
