When the Bell Tolls: A Systems View of Cure

Abstract

This article examines a systems view of cure. It proposes that a conceptualization of the notion of cure must include a perspective on the notion of failure. Failure and suffering are seen as integral parts of our subjectivity and serve as a valuable medium to allow us to learn how to be with one another. The interaction of differently organized subjective worlds in psychotherapy show how closely weakness and strength, cure and failure are entwined in any psychotherapeutic process. On the level of the bi-directional encounter, the process of cure has to do with how the idiosyncratic strengths and shortcomings of both participants become entangled and are subsequently dealt with in the working-through process. While the asymmetric setting is upheld and the focus of our work remains on our patients, any healing process will involve the personal transformation of both participants. Cure is, thus, understood as a razor's edge that cuts both ways. Inasmuch as we are able to come to terms with this, we may find ourselves released from an imperative to cure, but at home in a common humanity.

Este artículo examina la perspectiva de los sistemas sobre la cura. Se propone que la conceptualización de la noción de cura debe incluir la noción de fracaso. Fracaso y sufrimiento son vistos como partes integrantes de nuestra subjetividad y sirven como un medio valioso para aprender como estar con el otro. La interacción de mundos subjetivos organizados de forma distinta en una psicoterapia nos muestra como la debilidad y la fuerza, la cura y el fracaso están entrelazados en cualquier proceso psicoterapéutico. A nivel del encuentro bidireccional, el proceso de la cura tiene que ver en cómo los puntos fuertes y débiles de ambos participantes están entremezclados y subsecuentemente tratados en el proceso de elaboración. Aunque se mantiene un encuadre asimétrico y el foco de nuestro trabajo recae en nuestros pacientes, cualquier proceso curativo implica la transformación personal de ambos participantes. La cura es así entendida como una navaja de doble filo. En la medida que lo podemos aceptar, nos podemos liberar del imperativo de curar, pero bien situados en una humanidad común.

Campé dans une vision en systèmes de la cure, cet article plaide pour que la conceptualisation de celle-ci intègre la dimension d’échec. Constamment présentes dans notre subjectivité, l’échec et la souffrance s'avèrent de précieux outils dans l'apprentissage d’être avec l'autre. Cette interaction en entre deux mondes subjectifs différemment organisés révèle comment force et faiblesse, cure et échec sont étroitement imbriqués dans tout processus psychothérapeutique. En regard de la bi-directionalité de la rencontre, les forces et idiosyncrasies des deux participants s'entremêlent et deviennent disponibles à l'exploration au cours du processus interprétatif. Bien que la dissymétrie relationnelle soit maintenue et que la priorité de l'attention soit accordée au patient, tout processus de guérison implique la transformation personnelle des deux participants. Dans la cure, il y a donc émondage des deux côtés. Dans la mesure où nous l'acceptons,  nous nous libérons d'un impératif de guérir, en même temps que nous gagnons à nous sentir chez-nous dans une humanité commune.

L'articolo esamina una visione sistemica della cura. Prospetta l'ipotesi che una concettualizzazione della nozione di cura debba includere una prospettiva della nozione di fallimento. Fallimento e sofferenza vengono viste come parte integrante della nostra soggettività e costituiscono un valido strumento per imparare a stare gli uni con gli altri. l'interazione di mondi soggettivi diversamente organizzati mostra quanto strettamente intrecciati siano in ogni processo psicoterapeutico debolezza e forza, cura e fallimento. A livello dell'incontro bidirezionale il processo di cura ha a che fare con il modo in cui le risorse e i limiti idiosincratici di entrambe i partecipanti si mischino e vengano poi affrontati nel processo di elaborazione. Anche se la dimensione asimmetrica viene mantenuta e il centro del nostro lavoro resta focalizzato sui pazienti, ogni processo di guarigione implicherà la trasformazione personale di tutti e due i partecipanti. In questo moddo la cura è concepita come la lama di un rasoio che taglia da entrambe i lati. Mella misura in cui siamo in grado di fare i conti con questo, possiamo sentirci sollevati dall'imperativo della cura, ma a casa in una umanità condivisa.

Dieser Artikel untersucht einen systemischen Blick auf Heilung. Er schlägt vor, dass eine Konzeptualisierung von Heilung die Perspektive des Begriffes des Scheiterns beinhalten muss. Scheitern und Leiden werden als integrale Bestandteile unserer Subjektivität betrachtet und dienen als wichtiges Medium, das uns erlaubt zu lernen, wie wir miteinander umgehen können. Die Interaktion unterschiedlich organisierter subjektiver Welten in der Psychotherapie zeigt, wie eng Schwäche und Stärke, Heilung und Scheitern in jedem psychotherapeutischen Prozess miteinander verwoben sind. Auf der Ebene der wechselseitigen Begegnung hat der Prozess der Heilung damit zu tun, wie die idiosynkratischen Stärken und Mängel beider Beteiligter miteinander verstrickt und im Durcharbeitungsprozess schließlich bearbeitet werden. Während ein asymmetrisches Setting aufrechterhalten und das Augenmerk in unserer Arbeit auf unsere Patienten gerichtet bleibt, wird jeglicher Heilungsprozess die persönliche Veränderung beider Beteiligter beinhalten. Heilung wird als die Rasierklinge verstanden, die in beiden Richtungen schneiden kann. Insofern wir in der Lage sind, damit zurechtzukommen, werden wir von der Forderung befreit, zu heilen und kommen an in der gemeinsamen Menschlichkeit.
