Orange, the first discussant, considers Stern’s case from an intersubjective, self psychological perspective. While impressed with the outcome of this case, she proposes that Stern’s theoretical convictions about connectedness contributed to struggles, centered on trust, between him and his patient. Orange urges the analyst to hold theories lightly, and explores why it might be difficult to maintain such a fallibilistic stance. The second discussant, Wallin, views Stern’s case from an attachment theory perspective, giving special consideration to the analyst's attachment history and its impact on treatment. Wallin suggests the analyst speak about his own attachment issues with his patient in order to further a shared sense of connectedness. Last, Stern, in response to the two discussants, elaborates his thoughts about connectedness and introduces the theme of power. Reflecting on his treatment of Linda, he emphasizes her need to feel powerful with him. The theme of personal power, or sense of agency, appears complementary to the overall theme of connectedness. Developing an increased sense of agency in treatment can, seemingly paradoxically, enhance the patient’s sense of connectedness with her analyst.
