What Do Humans Need to Be Human? Self Psychology and the Problem of Social Justice

Abstract

This article shows how self psychology can be used as a basis for social critique. It examines the inherent injustices of modern economic society and shows how self psychology can both reveal them and show the dire consequences for this systematic de-humanization. It compares humans as economic subjects with humans organized around self-structure and shows how modern economic society undermines the possibilities of developing and sustaining self-structure. Finally, it inquires as to whether the nascent program at Lod, which combines psychoanalysis and Buddhism, might represent a new vision of human ontology.

Cet article fait valoir que la psychologie du soi peut servir de base conceptuelle à une critique sociale. L’auteur porte son regard sur les injustices criantes de la société économique contemporaine et sur les effets dévastateurs de la déshumanisation qu’elle entraîne systématiquement. Comparant le « sujet économique» au « sujet structurellement organisé», il déplore que la culture marchande compromette les possibilités de développement et de soutien de ce dernier. Enfin, il présente le projet de Lod, qui combine psychanalyse et bouddhisme, comme porteur d’une nouvelle vision de l’ontologie humaine.

L’articolo mostra come la psicologia del sé possa essere utilizzata come base per una critica sociale. Vengono prese in esame le ingiustizie intrinseche all’economia della società moderna e si dimostra come la psicologia del sé sia in grado di svelarle e illustrare le conseguenze disastrose di questa sistematica disumanizzazione. Vengono messi a confronto gli esseri umani in quanto soggetti economici con esseri umani organizzati intorno ad una struttura del sé e si rivela come la società economica moderna mini le possibilità di sviluppo e sostegno della struttura del sé. Infine ci si chiede se il programma che sta per nascere a Lod, che combina psicoanalisi e Buddismo, possa rappresentare una visione nuova dell’ontologia umana.

Dieser Artikel stellt dar, wie die Selbstpsychologie als Grundlage einer sozialen Kritik verwendet werden kann. Er untersucht die inhärenten Ungerechtigkeiten der modernen ökonomischen Gesellschaft und zeigt auf, wie die Selbstpsychhologie sie aufdecken und auch die harten Konsequenzen der systematischen Entmenschlichung eutlich machen kann. Er vergleicht Menschen als ökonomische Subjekte mit Menschen, die gemäß einer Selbststruktur organisiert sind und macht deutlich, wie die moderne ökonomische Gesellschaft die Möglichkeiten der Entwicklung und Aufrechterhaltung einer Selbststruktur unterminiert. Und schließlich untersucht er, ob das in Entwicklung befindliche Projekt in Lod, das die Psychoanalyse und den Buddhismus verbindet, eine neue Vision einer menschlichen Ontologie darstellen kann.

Este artículo muestra como la psicología del self puede ser utilizada como base para la crítica social. Examina las injusticias inherentes a la moderna sociedad económica y muestra como la psicología del self las puede poner al descubierto y mostrar las terribles consecuencias de esta deshumanización sistemática. Se comparan los humanos como sujetos económicos con los humanos que se organizan alrededor de una estructura del self, y se muestra como la sociedad económica moderna socava las posibilidades de desarrollar y sostener una estructura del self. Finalmente se pregunta si el programa que se está iniciando en Lod, que combina psicoanálisis y Budismo, podría representar una nueva visión de la ontología humana.
