Bullies Close to Home

Abstract

The destructive influence of bullying, defined as a form of aggressive behavior involving emotional, verbal, or physical abuse, is felt in every relational configuration imaginable from dyads to large social and political groups. This article attempts to show how certain forms of bullying originate in intergenerational traumas. Using a relational systems approach to trauma and further developing my concept of “traumatic attachments,” I examine experiences of bullying in my own life. I attempt to show how Freud’s life and thought reflect themes of bullying as a response to the traumatizing anti-Semitism that infiltrated his development; and I briefly describe my work with a patient whose experiences of being the victim of bullying may be traced back to her grandparents’ generation. I reflect on how intergenerational traumas in my life may have sensitized me to being perceived as a bully by her.

L’effet destructeur de l’intimidation, définie en termes de comportements agressifs avec abus physique, verbal ou émotionnel, se fait ressentir au sein de toute configuration relationnelle, depuis la relation duelle jusqu’aux grands groupes sociaux et politiques. Cet article s’attache à montrer que certains cas d’intimidation prennent leur source dans des traumatismes intergénérationnels. Appliquant au traumatisme une approche systémique relationnelle et en développant plus avant mon concept d’attachement traumatique», je me penche sur les expériences d’intimidation dans ma propre vie. Je tente également de dégager dans la vie et la pensée de Freud des thèmes d’intimidation en tant que réaction à l’antisémitisme qui a pesé sur son développement. Enfin, je décris brièvement mon travail avec une patiente pour qui des expériences d’être victime d’intimidation peuvent être retracées jusqu’à la génération des grands-parents, m’interrogeant sur la manière dont mes propres traumatismes intergénérationnels peuvent avoir induit que je sois perçue par elle comme intimidatrice.

La influencia destructiva del bullying, definido como una forma de conducta agresiva que implica un abuso emocional, verbal o físico, se puede sentir en todas las configuraciones relacionales imaginables, desde las díadas hasta grandes grupos sociales y políticos. Este artículo intenta mostrar como ciertas formas de bullying se originan en traumas intergeneracionales. Utilizando el abordaje al trauma de los sistemas relacionales y desarrollando mi concepto de los “apegos traumáticos”, examino experiencias de bullying en mi propia vida; Intento mostrar como la vida y el pensamiento de Freud muestran cuestiones de bullying como respuesta al anti- semitismo traumático que tan presente estuvo en su desarrollo; y describo también brevemente mi trabajo con un paciente cuyas experiencias de ser víctima de bullying pueden remitirnos a la generación de sus abuelos. Reflexiono en como los traumas intergeneracionales de mi vida me pueden haber sensibilizado para ser percibida por ella como una abusadora.

L’articolo cerca di mostrare come certe forme di bullismo scaturiscano da traumi intergenerazionali. Utilizzando un approccio sistemico relazionale al trauma e sviluppando ulteriormente il mio concetto di “attaccamento traumatico”, esamino esperienze di bullismo nella mia stessa vita; cerco di mostrare come la vita di Freud e il suo pensiero riflettano tematiche di bullismo come risposta all’anti-semitismo traumatizzante che aveva pervaso il suo sviluppo; e descrivo brevemente il mio lavoro con una paziente le cui esperienze di essere vittima di bullismo potessero essere ricondotte alla generazione dei nonni. Rifletto su come traumi intergenerazionali nella mia vita mi abbiano reso particolarmente sensibile al fatto di essere percepita come un bullo da lei.

Das zerstörerische Potential das Bullyings, das als eine Form des aggressiven Verhaltens definiert wird, das emotionalen, verbalen oder körperlichen Missbrauch beinhaltet, wird in jeder relationalen Konfiguration erlebt, von der Zweierbeziehung bis zu größeren sozialen und politischen Gruppen. Dieser Artikel bemüht sich aufzuzeigen, wie gewisse Formen des Bullyings in generationenübergreifenden Traumata ihren Ausgang nehmen. Mit Hilfe eines relational systemischen Ansatzes und der Weiterentwicklung meines Konzeptes der “traumatischen Bindung” untersuche ich eigene Erfahrungen mit Bullying; ich bemühe mich dann, aufzuzeigen, wie Freuds Leben und Denken Aspekte des Bullying als Antwort auf den traumatischen Antisemitismus widerspiegeln, der seine Entwicklung durchdrungen hat; und ich beschreibe kurz meine Arbeit mit einer Patientin, deren Erlebnisse als Opfer von Bullying bis in die Generation ihrer Großeltern zurückverfolgt werden konnten. Ich denke darüber nach, wie mich generationenübergreifende Traumata in meinem eigenen Leben möglicherweise dafür sensibilisiert haben, in welcher Weise ich von ihr als Bully wahrgenommen wurde.
