Pages 140-143 | Published online: 03 Sep 2009

Abstract

This work was part of the Analog Interactivity exhibit at Sci-Arc, Los Angeles, 2009.

Candy Chang is an artist, designer, and urban planner in Helsinki, Finland. With a background in architecture, graphic design, and urban planning, she likes to combine these disciplines to make urban communication more accessible and engaging through design and the creative use of public space. Her graduate thesis was about improving communication tools and networks at the neighborhood scale by examining outdoor flyers and online forums. Since 2006, she's worked in Nairobi, New Orleans, Vancouver, Johannesburg, and New York City on collaborative community-based projects.

She lived in New York City from 2001–2009. During that time she co-founded the creative agency Red Antenna, founded an online store called 9th Exhibition, and designed the Arts & Leisure section of The New York Times. Thanks to nerdy computer programs and vintage keyboards, she also makes music and released her record Typography in 2003. She has performed in NYC, Detroit, and Grenoble, and her art work has been featured in the U.S., Italy, and Russia. Candy now spends her time as a Design Specialist at Nokia. She likes public transportation, maps, and world's fairs, and has won few awards that compare to 2nd place in rodeo horse grooming when she was seven.
