Workplace bullying and employee well-being: A moderated mediation model of resilience and perceived victimization

Abstract

The present study provides insights into the multilayered effects of workplace bullying on employee well-being by employing a moderated mediation model of resilience and perceived victimization. The mediating role of perceived victimization in the relationship between bullying and employee well-being was assessed. Further, the moderating effect of resilience in controlling the repercussions of bullying and subsequent victimization was evaluated. Finally, the study examined the moderated mediation impact of resilience and perceived victimization on the association between bullying and employee well-being. The proposed model has been tested among 512 employees, using structural equation modeling. The results of the mediation analysis showed an indirect negative relationship between bullying and well-being through perceived victimization. Moderation analyses indicated that resilience controls for the positive effects of bullying on perceived victimization and further mitigates the negative effects of perceived victimization on employee well-being. Finally, moderated mediation association between bullying and well-being was confirmed, indicating that resilience buffers the indirect negative effects of bullying on the well-being of employees mediated through perceived victimization. This study endorses the role of individual factors in a more comprehensive model of workplace bullying. Knowledge about such factors would assist in working out prevention and intervention strategies, thereby enhancing employee well-being.
