Tribute to Marty Doot

Page 1 | Published online: 05 Mar 2009

Martin “Marty” C. Doot, MD, FAAFP, FASAM died on November 14, 2008 at the age of 60. Marty was the Chief of Addiction Medicine, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and the Director of the Illinois Professional Health Program. His pioneering work on behalf of recovering physicians, which he later extended to a broad range of recovering health care professionals, provided a direct resource in the state of Illinois, and a model for other similar programs nationally and internationally. He will be missed and lovingly remembered by several generations of health care professionals whose lives were transformed with the benefit of the compassionate support that Marty and his staff provided with dedication and warmth. In addition to his clinical work, Marty served tirelessly in multiple capacities for the American Society for Addiction Medicine, the Illinois Society for Addiction Medicine, the Federation of State Physician Health Programs and the Illinois Medical Society Physicians Assistance Committee. I had the privilege of working with Marty as our interests and passions ran parallel, and his open-mindedness continues to serve as a source of inspiration for me as an editor of a journal which fosters a multiplicity of professional and theoretical orientations.
