For six decades, the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), a sponsoring society of Clinical Toxicology, has served the American public through poison information and poison prevention services. For the last four decades, the organization has published annual reports of poison trends and data to inform clinicians and policy makers.
The AAPCC now emerges from the alphabet soup to become America’s Poison Centers (). The new name more clearly asserts organization’s full range of services, identity, vision, and mission.
What remains the same is the freely available service to America’s citizens and clinicians with accurate poison information available anytime through a single telephone number (1-800-222-1222) or online at www.PoisonHelp.org. The organization’s National Poison Data System© remains the only near-real time data system that captures and integrates poisoning data from all of the nation’s 55 centers. The accreditation arm of the association will remain AAPCC to verify that poison centers meet the highest standards.
Authors of current and future articles in Clinical Toxicology should henceforth use America’s Poison Centers when referring to the organization or its National Poison Data System©.
