Multitiered System of Support with Attention Problems: The Role of the School Counselor

ABSTRACT

Attention is crucial for academic success, as well as social and emotional growth and development. In this article, the authors discuss models of attention and ways attention influences social and emotional learning and academic success. Additionally, they describe interventions that address attention concerns and discuss implications of using the Multitiered System of Supports (MTSS).

Yi-Wen Su, Ph.D., NCC, is an assistant professor in the Counselor Education Department at Portland State University. Her research interests include school counseling, bullying and cyberbullying prevention, mindfulness, and international students’ professional identities in counselor education programs.

Jacqueline Swank, Ph.D., LMHC, LCSW, RPT-S, is an associate teaching professor of mental health practices in schools at the University of Missouri. Her research interests include the use of nature and play-based interventions to promote the holistic development of children and adolescents, counselor development, assessment, and international counseling.
