ABSTRACT

Biomass is considered to be a renewable energy source and bears significant potential to contribute to the production of biofuels. The present paper aims to determine optimum process parameters for the extraction of biofuels. The pyrolysis process can produce high-grade biofuels having a yield of 21.9 to 75 per cent depending upon the temperature of process, type of biomass and reactor. The cost of production is 0.09 to 0.21 USD per kg with an investment of 0.39 to 46 million USD. Among the slow, fast and flash pyrolysis, the fast pyrolysis requires relatively lower cost of equipment and yields 74 per cent of biofuels. The temperature of the reactor is also lower (700–950 K) in comparison to the flash pyrolysis in which the reactor temperature is in the range of 1050–1300 K.
