ABSTRACT

Algae are not only a great source of natural bio energy but also they have the ability to capture CO2. ALGADISK refers to a biofilm reactor for algae biomass production that could compete with the current algae cultivation technologies, e.g., open-pond and tubular photo bioreactors. When algae-based biomass is grown on the surface attached biofilm as opposed to a suspended culture, then the biomass is concentrated and it can be more easily harvested. Automatic and continuous harvesting, increased efficiency and decreased water requirements indicate ALGADISK as a promising technology. Since it is in developing stage, it has its own disadvantages such as it is not recommended to operate in cold weather conditions.
