ABSTRACT
Ferrofluids are gaining popularity among researchers due their versatility by virtue of their thermal and electrical properties. This paper reviews the work done by different researchers in the field of magnetic nanoparticles in IC engines in addition to their combined efforts to achieve maximum enhancement in engine performance. This paper focuses on experimental work done to reduce harmful emission (such as UHC, CO, and NOx) by the introduction of ferrofluids in different sections of IC engines. Various researches elucidate that the introduction of ferro-fluids maximizes the engine performance by improving cooling (resulting in 1.388 Kmpl increment in mileage) and combustion. In addition, by virtue of their combined effect, an overall enhancement in performance factors has been observed, such as enhancement in brake thermal efficiency (up to 12–16%), reduction in brake specific fuel consumption (up to 11%), increased evaporation rate, reduced ignition delay, and increased mileage. This review further encapsulates different ways to produce magnetic nanoparticles and their stability in different mediums. Finally, the wide array of applications of ferro-fluids in addition to IC engines is discussed.
