Smart gas sensor based on photonic crystal for sensing perilous gases: industrial and mining applications

ABSTRACT

Among the most crucial tools for detecting poisonous gases, the gas sensor offers a significant way to track the concentration and environmental data of gas in care of the safety of production. Gas sensing techniques are widely used, although there are challenges with their portability or durability. Therefore, it is vital to find a reliable detection method. This article presents a susceptible photonic crystal (PhC) sensor based on a micro-ring resonator. The novel square shape Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) rod is used to design the structure for gas detection with the help of the tool called Rsoft. Further, the investigation is carried out for various shapes of PhC structure, including square, rhombus, pentagon, and hexagon. The defect is introduced mid in the PhC resonator to enhance the sensing parameters. The detection parameters are considered such as quality factor (QF), detection limit (DEL), sensitivity (S) and efficiency (η). In this way, the optimized pentagon PhC sensor structure is obtained with a result of 1600 nm, 99.8% η, 865.2 nm/RIU of “S” for detecting various toxic gases. Therefore, the recommended PhC sensor is relevant to factories, mines, thermal plants, farming, health care applications, etc.
