Notes from the editorial office

As we continue in our 50th Volume, we are very happy and proud to publish a special issue highlighting community resilience. This special issue was conceived at least two years ago by three of our colleagues and they have brought it to fruition in this our second issue of the 50th volume. Anne Cafer, Gary Goreham, and John Green are leading this effort to publish a set of articles that link community development practice with a maturing literature on community resilience theory and practice. They have compiled a set of authors who have written about frameworks for understanding and a set of case studies to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of current theorizing and practice. We defer to the editors for their introduction to the special issue but emphasize how these guest editors suggest this special issue is “a starting place for scholarly conversations about the role of community resilience in community development practice.” We hope indeed that future research will build on the ideas in this special issue and call for our readers to read these articles and think of how you might advance the theory and practice of community resilience.

Beyond community resilience, we also invite ideas for future research, whether it is an individual article, a themed issue, or a special issue. Please continue to push the boundaries and depth of the theory, empirics, and practice of community development. We can view this special issue as a nice model and motivator. For this reason, we thank Anne, Gary, and John for their valuable contribution, and look forward to both new submissions and themes from our readers and to further discussions as we gather in Missouri this July at the Annual Meeting of the Community Development Society.
