Bíomedícal Polymers

Abstract

One of the most exciting current fields of research is that of biomedical polymers: the replacement of various complex biological materials in the body with less complex synthetic polymers, designed to perform the function of the natural material. These may range from relatively simple “artificial” parts (such as vascular prostheses, heart valves, lenses and vitreous fluid of eyes, drain tubes, tendons, cosmetic implant materials) and assist materials (such as sutures, surgical adhesives, and plasma extenders) to more complex devices (such as artificial kidneys, artificial lungs, and artificial heart and assist devices). The environment to which the polymers are exposed varies considerably, since their uses may be external or internal, temporary or permanent.
