Special Issue: Benefits and Threats of Travel and Tourism in a Globalized Cultural Context

This special issue of the World Leisure Journal will focus on travel and tourism in an international context. Recent decades have witnessed tremendous increased international and domestic travel in an increasingly globalized world. A steady growth of the industry has led to many threats and negative impacts globally. Voicing these impacts, residents are protesting over tourism in cities such as Venice and Barcelona. Yet, on the other side changing traveler demands have also led to an increase in travelers interested in authentic and meaningful experiences and a form of travel that treads more lightly. This special issue will cover empirical research (both qualitative and quantitative), and systematic reviews. Examples of evidence-based practice pertaining to tourism are also encouraged. All submissions will be peer-reviewed. Studies focusing on the relationship between leisure and tourism, as well as tourism from the global perspective and in non-dominant contexts (such as for example social tourism, volunteer tourism) are particularly sought.

Examples of topics for this special issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Conceptual and theoretical issues related to tourism in relation to leisure in a broad sense.

• The roles of international and domestic organizations in influencing policies and the industry.

• Contributions of tourism to the traveler’s identity development, intercultural understanding and peace.

• The effects of globalization on tourism choices and behaviors and understanding of culture.

• The roles of tourism in meeting the sustainable development goals of the UNWTO.

• The potential of tourism as a tool for environmental conservation and to sustain livelihoods and culture.

• Travel and tourism and ethnicity.

• The impacts of tourism, both positive and negative, on environment, people and economy.

1. All manuscripts must be in English and must not exceed 9000 words all inclusive. Manuscripts that exceed this limit will not be reviewed until they conform.

2. Manuscripts must be double spaced in 12 pt New Times Roman.

3. Manuscripts must adhere to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 6^th edition).

4. Manuscripts should be sent as e-mail attachments in doc or docx formats.
