Abstract
Several studies have examined the relationship between diabetes mellitus and hearing loss, but with conflicting findings. In this study the hearing levels of 68 diabetic patients were determined, compared to 58 non‐diabetic control group, and in addition a comparison was made between subgroups of diabetic patients. Significantly higher thresholds were observed in the diabetic group as compared to the control group. Diabetic patients with complications had more impairment of hearing than those without. Similarly, poorly controlled diabetic patients (HbA1c ≥ 7) had worse hearing than patients with well‐controlled diabetes; however, the first group was significantly older. The results of this study suggest that age‐related hearing loss is a significant factor in the controversy surrounding hearing loss in diabetic patients.
