Abstract
Six guiding aspirations have informed epidemiological research in adolescent risk behaviour in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cape Town: scientific excellence; a response to public health priorities; appropriate dissemination of findings; collaboration; research capacity development; and epidemiological progression. Several research projects conducted or planned since 1990 are assessed in the light of these aspirations. A key focus is the manner in which the aspirations interrelate with each other. This prior research forms the foundation upon which intervention research can be based.
